Orthodontics for Kids

Parents sometimes think that orthodontic treatment should be delayed until adolescence when all permanent teeth have come in. It is now recognized that some orthodontic problems are most effectively treated if detected early. At OrthoCare Orthodontics, we follow the recommendations outlined by the Australian Society of Orthodontics that every child should have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. The aim of early orthodontic treatment is to intercept a developing problem before it becomes more serious and difficult to treat. Early diagnosis and correction of certain problems can make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. Although not all children need early treatment, there are some instances where it is essential to correct problems affecting oral health, growth and development. Dr Kaplan adopts a conservative approach to early treatment, and will only recommend this type of treatment for your child when it is clearly indicated. If early treatment is not needed, the patient's growth and development can be carefully monitored until the time is right for treatment to begin. Because starting orthodontic treatment at the right time is critical to achieve the best possible outcome for your child, this monitoring service is offered to you at no charge.

Orthodontics for Teens

The teenage years are the most common period when orthodontic treatment takes place. This is an ideal time because facial and skeletal growth is occurring at an accelerated pace, which can be harnessed to achieve the best possible outcome. It is also optimal because this is the age at which all the permanent teeth come through.

Dr Kaplan and her staff know that teenagers lead very busy lives, so they make every effort to ensure that each and every orthodontic visit is efficient, effective, and an enjoyable experience.

Orthodontics for Adults

Orthodontic treatment can produce great results at any age. In fact, 1 in every 5 orthodontic patients today is an adult. Due to the range of comfortable and discrete treatment options, more adults than ever before are making the decision to improve their smile. At Orthocare Orthodontics, we proudly offer a range of progressive treatments including clear ceramic braces, Invisalign, as well as more traditional alternatives to suit your individual lifestyle.

Why consider orthodontic treatment as an adult?

Most adult patients seek orthodontic treatment because they have the natural desire for healthier teeth and gums and a more confident smile. Orthodontic treatment can not only improve your smile and appearance, it can also contribute to the health and function of your teeth. A range of problems result from untreated malocclusions or bad bites, where the teeth do not fit together properly. Crowded and overlapping teeth are more difficult to keep clean, and inadequate cleaning is a major contributing factor which can increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Protruding teeth are more susceptible to damage such as fractures and chipping. Crooked teeth and a bad bite can also lead to uneven tooth wear, difficulty chewing, jaw joint problems, and minor speech impediments. All of these problems can be addressed with orthodontic treatment.

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common orthodontic treatment used to straighten teeth. These braces consist of brackets and wires that are made of high-quality stainless steel. The wires apply a small, constant force that progressively moves the teeth into the correct position. Because the metal braces in use today are much smaller, flatter, and more comfortable than in the past, they are a very popular option for orthodontic patients. These braces are popular amongst kids and teens as they also provide the option of adding various colours throughout treatment.

Ceramic (clear) braces

Ceramic braces are made of clear ceramic material, making them less noticeable than traditional metal braces. As a result, ceramic braces provide an aesthetically pleasing alternative and are especially popular with teenagers and adult patients who may have heightened concerns about their appearance during treatment. Ceramic braces also use an archwire and work in a similar way to traditional metal braces.

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen provide a virtually invisible alternative to traditional braces and have become a popular alternative for those patients who desire a more cosmetic appliance during treatment. The Invisalign system uses a custom-designed series of clear, removable plastic aligners that employ a gradual force to guide your teeth into correct position. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move until the final position of your teeth is achieved. Each aligner is worn for at least 20 hours a day and switched at approximately 2-week intervals.

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen offer a powerful combination of aesthetics, flexibility, and comfort. The aligners are virtually invisible and can be removed for important events and social interactions. Invisalign provides the flexibility to eat and drink whatever you want during treatment since aligners can be temporarily removed. This feature also enables improved oral hygiene compared with conventional braces as the aligners can be removed to allow normal tooth brushing and flossing.
